Once there was a little lamb
Who sought his Shepherd in the land.
I am not lost,
the lamb did say,
I have not wandered, gone astray,
I know precisely where I am!
The others here within my band
Have founded many schools of thought
Of how, or where, or whether not
Our Shepherd even can be sought.
A group of lambs out by the sea
Awaited him quite patiently.
Some thought the Shepherd could be found
Within the hollows of the ground,
But others set their sights quite high
To find his signal in the sky!
Another group just sat and sought
The Shepherd deep within their thought.
They sought the Shepherd, found him not,
But comfort from their seeking got.
We may not ever find him out,
But comfort’s what it’s all about!
The little lamb just shook his head,
A search without a goal is dead.
And so the lamb struck out one day
To seek his Shepherd in his way.
He looked into the deep blue sea,
Where fishes languish dreamily.
He looked through all the stars of night,
But could not find his Shepherd’s light.
He meditated through the day,
But answers would not come that way.
The lamb kicked over every stone,
And found himself still quite alone.
Then came the terrors of the night!
With dark around, and naught but fright
To guide the little lamb back home;
He bleated softly all alone.
The trees in darkness were distorted,
Shapes were odd, they were contorted;
Until the dreadful gleam he saw
Of shining tooth in hungry jaw!
The other wolves were gathered near,
There wasn’t even time for fear!
Then suddenly the Shepherd came
On mighty steed, with sword aflame!
He vanquished all the wolves that night
And saved the lamb from frightful plight.
The little lamb spent all his life
To tell the tale of that night’s strife.
They listened, but his story spurned.
Today we see what they have learned:
A group of lambs out by the sea
Await the Shepherd patiently.
Some think the Shepherd can be found
Within the hollows of the ground,
But others set their sites quite high
To find his signal in the sky!
Another group just meditates,
Upon the Shepherd contemplates.
It goes against the way it’s planned,
When Shepherds harken to the lambs;
When fish forsake their comfy lake
And force the angler them to take!
I don’t know why it’s thought so odd
That people cannot find their God.
